Depart from the Monument (*1) in the Balfron direction, leaving the village along King’s Mile, passing the old Observation post in the field on the right and Heron’s Court on the left. At the Blackhill Crossroads after 1.5km turn left onto Ballachruin Road (*2). Continue down the hill, cross the bridge over the river (where the water pipeline also crosses) and up the other side. At the T junction turn left towards Balfron Station (another stop on the old railway line). At the crossroads carefully cross the busy A81 and take the road straight ahead up past the Balfunning farms. Follow this road round to the right, to the junction with the A811 (*3).
Turn left towards Drymen – taking care on this road as the traffic travels quite fast. Continue on past Tir Na Nog (and consider stopping for refreshment) and Led Na Bra. After 7km take the left fork signposted Gartacharn Road (*4) – and enjoy the fabulous views of Dumgoyne. At 9.5 km reach the junction with Gartness Road and the West Highland Way (*5).
Turn left down the hill through Gartness, across the river and the old railway line. Cross the A81 again – taking care – and continue straight ahead past the old Curling Pond at Drumore, the Woodland Cemetery to the junction with Station Road at 12.5 km. Turn left up station Road, turning right at the junction by the Toll House and back to the Monument at 13 km.
